IPsphere Forum Approves Foundation Specification
Fremont, California – 12 June 2007 - The IPsphere Forum, a nonprofit organization dedicated to unleashing the business and societal benefits of IP convergence, today announced the publication of its Release 1 Technical Specification and a significant statement of support from its Service Provider Council.
The Release 1 specification details two key IPsphere dimensions: the rationale behind the IPsphere Forum mission and the technical framework functionality required to support this mission.
“The IPsphere Forum began with the vision of a world of communications services that could transcend geographical and stakeholder boundaries and deliver on the promises of IP convergence. Being able to offer software-driven, differentiated services over an open, multi-provider, IP-based infrastructure is essential to realising BT's 21st Century Network vision. The Release 1 Specification represents a major milestone in driving that vision to reality,” said Matt Bross, Group CTO at BT.
Leveraging the strengths of Service Oriented Architectures (SOA), the IPsphere specification outlines a universal operational framework that offers transformational flexibility to its stakeholders and users. At the heart of this framework is the ability to abstract and compose telecommunications and IT resources into unlimited service possibilities via a standardized messaging structure.
“The success of any model for multi-stakeholder or multi-geography services demands standards orientation and an acute responsiveness to change. SOA principles provide an obvious starting place; while the IPsphere framework adapts them perfectly for a telecommunications environment,” said Andrew Malis, IPsphere Forum Board Member and Director of Packet Network Architecture, Verizon Communications.
In addition, the IPsphere Forum’s Service Provider Council endorsed the technical specification and outlined a roadmap to incorporate IPsphere framework requirements into Invitation to Tender (ITT) procedures.
“Our customers demand the same experience regardless of the device, the network or the service providers involved in making it happen. The members in this forum recognize the growing need for an IP framework. The Forum is key to ensuring all support a framework that will deliver on that consistent customer experience. Technology companies that provide products and services to carriers must adopt the IPsphere framework. Helping us deliver these new IP services is paramount and we need our suppliers and partners to get on-board with the Forum and its work,” said Brent Allison, TELUS vice president, Partner Solutions marketing.
“The delivery of our foundation specification is clearly a key milestone and an important accomplishment for the IPsphere Forum. The Service Provider Council’s roadmap to incorporate IPsphere requirements into its ITT processes is perhaps an even more significant achievement. Validating the work of the Forum is one thing; validating the real demand for IPsphere capabilities shows that network operators worldwide have serious intentions,” added Kevin Dillon, Chairman of the IPsphere Forum and VP CTO Group, Juniper Networks.
The next IPsphere Forum member meeting will be hosted by France Telecom from September 25-27 in Dinard, France.
