LETTER FROM THE CHAIRMAN

Dear IPSF Members and Friends,

Welcome to the first edition of the IPsphere Forum newsletter, InnerSphere. Each quarter the IPsphere Forum will release a newsletter to let our members and friends know what has been happening in the Forum over the past quarter and what we have planned for the future.

Our most recent member meeting hosted by T-Com in Berlin, Germany in May was a great success - highlighted by approval of our Release 1 Technical Specification for publication (www.ipsphereforum.org/R1Spec.html). At this same meeting, our Service Provider Council (SPC) also outlined plans for incorporating IPsphere requirements into their tender procedures. Earlier in the year, we also awarded our first two Circle of Excellence awards to very deserving members of the IPsphere community – Mat Ford of BT and Christian Jacquenet of FT - for their exceptional contributions to the work of the IPSF.

Our technical committees have been hard at work driving specification efforts and establishing vibrant bi-directional relationships with leading industry fora such as the TeleManagement Forum and GSM Association. The Reference Implementation Working Group (RIWG) is sure to get a boost from the recent appointment of JP Vasseur of Cisco as vice-chair. The working groups have also been busy participating in almost monthly interim meetings. In February the IPSF met in Whippany, New Jersey to discuss SSRM and interoperability issues at a meeting hosted by Alcatel-Lucent. The Data Model Workshop, hosted by Telstra, took place in March in Melbourne, Australia and produced a record number of contributions. The working groups met again in Paris in April in an event hosted by Alcatel-Lucent to discuss IPSF harmonization with different standard bodies. Most recently, in Billerica, Massachusetts hosted by Soapstone Networks, the IPSF made further strides on SSRM and data model initiatives.

The rest of the year promises to be as eventful as the beginning. Right now the Marketing Committee is working hard on a redesign of the IPSF website in advance of our next member meeting. Additionally, the IPSF will meet in Dinard, France from 25-27 September for our third plenary meeting of 2007 hosted by France Telecom. All full member companies are encouraged to attend our plenary meetings and interim workshops. In addition, those companies that are contemplating IPsphere Forum membership are encouraged to attend a member meeting on an observer basis.

We hope you find the newsletter entertaining and informative. If you have any comments or questions, please contact info@ipsphereforum.org

Regards,
Kevin Dillon
Chairman, IPsphere Forum

IPSF NEWS

In June the IPsphere Forum published two highly anticipated documents that are now available to the public. The first is the Release 1 Technical Specification (www.ipsphereforum.org/R1Spec.html). The specification details two key IPsphere dimensions: the rationale behind the IPsphere Forum mission, and the technical framework functionality required to support the mission. The Release 1 Technical Specification is the first document that companies would use to execute an IPsphere business framework and that vendors and service providers could use to begin implementing IPsphere. Also in June the IPsphere Forum published an updated business framework white paper entitled "The Business of IP." The white paper details how the IPsphere Forum will deliver on the promise of IP convergence. To read the white paper, please click here.

In the coming months the IPsphere Forum hopes to issue further releases of the Technical Specification and a technical white paper. Also on the horizon is the highly anticipated publication of Session Services and Resources Management (SSRM) Framework.

The State of the Industry: 2007

By Tom Nolle, CIMI Corporation

Part 1:  Learning the Four Truths

In a lot of ways, 2007 will mark a kind of “end of adolescence” for the principle of IP convergence that has been a cornerstone in carrier planning for the last decade. IP has passed through a period of exuberance, one of idealism, and it’s now facing a reality that is a bit more complex than it seemed when the whole process began.

2006 showed four basic truths about the service provider business worldwide:

  1. Growth in the consumer market for non-voice services—from SMS in mobile services to video content – will be a significant driver of future revenues for virtually every operator worldwide.
  2. Service providers must continue to invest in these services to ensure future profitability.
  3. Consumer expectations regarding new technologies and expanded service offerings will increasingly demand that the conception of provider infrastructure be broadened to include servers, storage, software, and other stakeholders who may provide resources, customer access, and specialized service elements like identity management and DRM.
  4. Operations costs threaten to grow radically as the range of offered services, and the types and numbers of new technologies used to produce service features, both explode.

2007 MEMBER MEETINGS

The IPsphere Forum met in New York City 21-23 February 2007 for its Q1 2007 Member Meeting. More than 60 delegates attended, representing 25 of the industry’s leading companies. The New York meeting featured two significant milestones. The first was the presentation of “IPsphere Top to Bottom” – an in-depth tutorial representing the most comprehensive articulation of the IPSF mission to date. Presentations by Chairman Kevin Dillon and by CIMI Corp’s Tom Nolle covered both the business rationale behind IPSF as well as the fundamental technical concepts that underpin the IPSF work program. The second was approval for sending the Release 1 Technical Specifications to a straw ballot – a major step in galvanizing the technical work of IPSF and moving closer to publication of the specification.

The IPsphere Forum held its Q2 07 Member Meeting in Berlin, Germany 8-10 May 2007 hosted by T-Com. More than 50 delegates attended the three-day meeting that included a record number of technical contributions from the last quarter’s interim meetings. Other key highlights from Berlin include a strong show support of the Release 1 Technical Specifications from the Service Provider Council as well as an agreed set of milestones and next steps for implementing the IPsphere Pre-Commercial Testbed.

The next IPsphere Forum meeting will be held 25-27 September in Dinard, France.

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT

Mat FordThe IPsphere Forum is pleased to announce the first recipients of the Circle of Excellence Award - presented to individual members who have made a significant contribution to the Forum.

At the Q1 07 meeting held in New York City, the IPsphere Forum formally recognized Matthew Ford of BT for his work as chair of the Reference Implementation Working Group (RIWG) and his efforts to move the IPSF prototyping exercises forward. On receiving the award Mat said, "It is an honor to be recognized by the Forum and a privilege to be working with some of the industry's leading engineers." He was particularly happy about receiving the official Circle of Excellence award-- an iPod shuffle in “IPSF green.” He admitted - with slight discomfort - that while he serves as the chair of a technical committee, he's just now entering the “technological age” as the award is his first-ever iPod.

Christian JacquenetAt the Q2 07 meeting held in Berlin, Germany, the Forum honored Christian Jacquenet of France Telecom in absentia for his consistent leadership in the Forum as the vice-chair of numerous committees, including the Service Provider Council and Business Dimensions Working Group. In addition, the members recognized Christian for being instrumental in championing the Release 1 Technical Specification through its lifecycle – including its recent ratification. Christian, too, was particularly pleased with receiving the “official” green IPsphere Forum iPod.

The IPsphere Forum plans to recognize outstanding contributions by individual members at each of its member meetings.  Members are encouraged to nominate individuals who they believe have made significant contributions to the IPsphere Forum. For more information on the program, please contact Shonna Anderson, IPSF Project Manager, at sanderson@ipsphereforum.org.
